Who We Are

RootsUprising is a Black, intergenerational, contemporary dance company. Led by choreographer Nailah Randall-Bellinger, the work is rooted in African American historic and literary texts as source material. Bringing to light unrecognized stories and exploring the lived experiences of African Americans, RootsUprising is about giving visibility to the Black body in a time of erasure.

Mission
Our vision is to address the dehumanization of Black people in America. Through the dance experience, RootsUprising invites their audiences to witness up close what trauma looks like and what healing feels like, all the while celebrating the Black aesthetic through the arts. Considering dance as text and text as dance, RootsUprising is a choreographic close reading which aims to deepen the conversation of what equitable social justice can be.
